Two Parkhill employees – Brian Griggs, AIA, and Kyle Bodine, AIA – were selected to be featured as winners in the 2016 Architectural Record annual Cocktail Napkin Sketch Contest.

Brian’s sketch was one of 11 Honorable Mentions and Kyle’s sketch earned him one of 12 spots in the Quirky and Creative entries.

“My wife, son, and I had just returned from a trip to Oklahoma City, where we had the chance to have lunch on the Riverwalk there in Bricktown,” said Griggs. “I’ve always been fascinated by the layers of design and systems that go into a riverwalk environment, so that inspired the sketch.”

“As a professional I’m always in search of the next best idea,” Bodine said. “What separates me from the next? I pictured the nomads seeking innovations in the land of opportunity. A journey I find myself on still today … get in line.”

More than 400 architects, designers, illustrators, and students submitted sketches to this year’s Cocktail Napkin Sketch Contest, which is now in its seventh year. It showcased the passion and skill of a diverse group of professionals. AR editors sifted through upwards of 2,000 individual napkins to select the winners.

Michael Baker and Les Burke of Parkhill drew the designs that won the 2018 Cocktail Napkin Sketch Contest Best Firm: Parkill. Baker’s sketch was titled “Grain Elevator and Red Locomotive,” and Burke submitted “Building Section Study.”
